"LabMU covered the need for experimenting with Digital TV Signals with a conceptual focus and without the restrictions that hardware equipment imply" says Josep R. Casas at UPC.

The TSC group at UPC is one among the significant customers of LabMU. This Department of the UPC  outstands for having the most complete LabMU in terms of functionality. Josep R. Casas is the head of department and his satisfaction with  LabMU is reflected every year by new acquisitions. "The first need covered by LabMU is the experimentation with Digital TV signals with conceptual approach and withouth the restrictions that HW implies", says Josep R. Casas about LabMU, and he continues "this restriction is overcome by LabMU by the operation in multiuser mode of a reduced set of hardware resources, by the interconnection the equipment to a server and the simulation of some services".

"The second advantage of LabMU with respect to professional headend equipment is the friendly user interfaces, based on configurable block diagrams, that successfully replaces the user interfaces present in hardware devices, with reduced displays and button boards that are not suitable for educational purposes due to the complexity"

Josep R. Casas adds that "this needs were partially covered before the acquisition of LabMU by using  single devices and by scheduling the access to the equipment in different turns for the students"

When asked about the response of the students to the use of LabMU he was clear: "The first students that used LabMU didn't work with the previous infrastructure, however they adapt to this new environment with no apparent difficulties and they consider that the system eases the experimentation with the concepts covered in lectures".
